Private banking has been defending its position as the most profitable segment in global banking, however a worrying development has been emerging. Despite rising assets under management in a pre-pandemic phase, there has been a trend of falling revenues with the industry profitability hitting a 12-year low in 2019.

Private banking faces an existential threat without a significant profitability boost.

Pricing has emerged as one of the most important levers for boosting profitability in private banking. Contrary to the general perception private banking clients show a high willingness to pay for quality service and time savings.

But are private banks ready to leverage pricing to offer a better experience to their clients? In zeb’s “Private Banking Pricing Pulse Check”, around 60 European Private Banking players self-assessed their pricing performance unveiling quite surprising results: only half of the respondents have a systematic pricing process, while less than a third analyze their preferential terms and profitability regularly and systematically.
