What factors influence effective behavioral energy efficiency programs?

New peer-reviewed report from ILLUME Advising, presented at the 2022 ACEEE Summer Study conference, examines the current state of behavioral energy efficiency and factors impacting behavioral program effectiveness. ILLUME conducted a meta-analysis of behavioral programs evaluated in the past three years and studied factors such as program duration, communication channels, and vendor on program performance. ILLUME’s findings include:

  • Behavioral programs are delivering significant energy savings that continue to grow over time.
  • Email-only behavioral programs may miss opportunities for more cost-effective energy and bill savings delivered by multichannel programs.
  • Opower delivered, on average, 120% of program savings targets. The next two most-evaluated vendors delivered, on average, only 72% and 49% of their program targets.
