I started my working career in the City of London. But business was (and is) my passion. I always wanted to be an entrepreneur. My first company was FF Returns where clients got support form us how to trade successfully. I sold FF Returns to a Danish bank, Saxo Bank. Together with my business partner, PJ Datema, we started the Dutch branch of Saxo Bank. We got all kind of questions from business clients if we also couldn't help with international money transfers. There's no reason for it to be expensive, and certainly shouldn't disappear into a black hole whilst the client is waiting for a payment to go through. So PJ and I decided to do something about it. We spoke to many clients and we soon realized that people accepted the status quo. They just went to their banks when they needed to move money abroad. Fees, charges and wide currency spreads were accepted as a fact of life, and they were never really sure when their money would arrive at its destination. Even small and medium-sized businesses doing significant international trade were not benefitting from the 'wholesale' rates that they might have expected when they wanted to move money around. There was (and is) clearly a gap in the market to provide a low-cost, simple and transparent service to people who needed to move money from one currency to another. And so the Nederlandsche Betaal & Wisselmaatschappij was born.
