Learn to define users, their goals, and identify existing data to gain clarity of purpose and deliver solutions for the “right” problems.
This all-hands workshop is for everyone.

    Description

With heavy workloads and the pressure to quickly deliver, it’s easy to start drawing and coding without first asking ourselves, “Who are we designing for? What are they trying to accomplish and why? What do we already know about them?”

Before placing any pixels on a canvas, we need define users and their goals and identify existing data to gain clarity of purpose and deliver solutions for the “right” problems.

This all-hands workshop will define a common approach for all of Oracle Design to take at the beginning of each project. We’ll discuss why user goals are important, practice writing them for your own projects, and see how to apply them throughout the design process.

    Lila Rubenstein

    Lila Rubenstein

    Design Researcher, Oracle Design

Are you looking for new ways to simplify presenting complex ideas, make your point memorable, and inspire action? Visual storytelling can help you break down complexity and humanize your output using simple illustrations, metaphors, and symbolism.

    Description

Visual storytelling is one of the oldest methods of communication. It fires up the brain and lights up our memory centers. It’s sticky because we can visualize ourselves in the protagonist's shoes. And it can motivate us to action.

Whether you’re a researcher sharing insights, a designer justifying your design rationale, or a PM communicating a common customer issue, visual storytelling can help you:

    • Build empathy with your audiences and users
    • Engage your audiences' senses and make your message sticky
    • Align stakeholders around a common understanding of your users’ needs
    • Compel a team to take action
    In this workshop, you’ll get:
    • A brief history of visual storytelling and the science of what makes it effective
    • An effective storytelling framework you can apply to elements of your communications
    • Easy techniques to communicate more visually—and get over the scary hump of going visual
    Required materials
    • Several sheets of blank paper
    • Regular point Sharpie marker
